Planet Groove Is Back — and So Is the Soul of Cagliari
Some events mark a date on the calendar. Others mark an era. On May 1st, Cagliari's Exma hosts the return of Planet Groove — the cult gathering that defined the city's musical identity in the 1990s. Twelve hours of non-stop black music, funk, hip hop and acid jazz, from noon to midnight, in one of the most beloved cultural spaces in the city. Entry is free.
Thirty Years of a Groove That Never Died
Born in the early '90s at the Fiera's teatro tenda, Planet Groove wasn't just a night out — it was a community. Cagliari looked straight at London and New York, long before the internet made that easy. A members-only crowd, selective and hungry for new sounds, gathered around legends like Jamiroquai, Soul II Soul, Brand New Heavies and Maceo Parker. That era didn't just shape a scene — it shaped a generation.
Radio X: The Heartbeat Behind It All
To understand Planet Groove, you need to understand Radio X. Founded in 1995 by a team of music professionals and communicators, Radio X made history as the first radio station in Europe to broadcast via internet streaming, going live online in February of that same year — when most of the world had never heard of the web. Today it broadcasts across Cagliari and southern Sardinia on 96.8 MHz, reaching over 30,000 daily listeners on FM and tens of thousands more online. Independent from any network or advertising conglomerate, Radio X has always stood for cultural journalism, quality music programming and a deep civic identity — earning its motto: Cagliari Social Radio. Its studio and social club now live inside the Exmà itself, making the venue not just a location, but a permanent home for the city's creative pulse.
A Line-Up That Tells a Story
Organized by Radio X together with historic promoters Bulla & Saba, the event brings the full Soul Funky Family back to the decks, alongside Discoli, Foxy & Herny, Jimmy Jaguar and newer collectives like Disco Bestiale and Groundloop — three generations sharing the same groove.
