Memory and visions

Memory and visions

From November 16 to May 18, 2025, the City Hall Palace hosts a selection of over fifty little-known works from the Sardinian collection and the contemporary art collection 'Ugo Ugo'.

The exhibition Memory and Visions, organized by the Department of Culture, Entertainment, and Tourism of the Municipality of Cagliari, and organized by the Civic Museums of Cagliari in collaboration with Orientare srl, covers a chronological period from 1859 to the late 1980s. In 2024, the Civic Museums celebrate their 91st anniversary: in November 1933, the Municipal Gallery of Art of Cagliari, the first civic museum in Sardinia, was inaugurated with the IV Municipal Trade Fair Fine Arts Show, which also led to the establishment of the Collection of Sardinian Artists. To celebrate this anniversary, the Civic Museums wanted to bring to light some masterpieces from the city collections that have been kept in storage and inaccessible to the public for some time.

From late 19th and early 20th-century paintings by Marghinotti, Melis Marini, Rossino, Maury, and Dessy to works born out of the 1960s protest movements by artists like Campus, Gilardi, Gallina, and Rotella, along with experiments by Locci and Vigo or the new languages of the 1980s by Atzeni, Vargiu, Frogheri, and Losengo. This is an opportunity to rediscover the great names of Sardinian art with works that have shaped art history and are part of the cultural history of our city, making the Civic Museums a reference point for the general public.
