Mario PES
On February 18th at 5:30 pm at the SEARCH space - the exhibition space of the municipal historical archive, a large photographic exhibition dedicated to Mario Pes (1887–1963), one of the most extraordinary interpreters of Sardinian photography of the 20th century, will be inaugurated.
The exhibition represents the culmination of the ongoing Mario Pes project, which had an important previous exhibition at the Ilisso Space in Nuoro and, in recent months, has brought a key figure of 20th century visual culture back into the spotlight through a series of editorial and film events in Cagliari. The initiative now serves as the conclusion of the project and at the same time as a new and decisive focus, offering a privileged observation of the work of Mario Pes, closely linked to the city where he lived.
"Mario Pes. Sardinia between tradition and modernity" is an engaging event, capable of speaking to a wide and diverse audience: scholars and enthusiasts, but also those who will come into contact with the photographer's work for the first time.
The heart of the exhibition is Cagliari, observed, traversed, and captured by Pes' gaze during a season of profound transformations. With over 200 images - many in large format - the exhibition constructs a visually intense narrative that reveals lesser-known aspects of the city: urban and peripheral spaces, the port, salt pans, workplaces, everyday life, architecture, faces, atmospheres, and geometries suspended between water and land.
