Disarmed - Luca Centola

Disamparàdu, photographs by Luca Centola.
Edited by Alice Deledda, with critical text by Simona Spinella.

In the Sardinian language, the words abandon, abandoned, and abandonment are translated as disamparare, disamparadu, disamparu, words not far from the verb disimparare.
A verb derived from imparare, whose prefix indicates the loss of knowledge of something, which is also reinforced in its synonyms: disapprendere, dimenticare, scordare.
But what have we unlearned? Have we unlearned to take care of places characterized by the ability to translate a collective need into 'care buildings' such as sanatoriums, colonies, schools, orphanages, etc.
Have we perhaps forgotten how to learn?
A reflection that becomes a denunciation through the images of Luca Centola, who explores Sardinian places from a different perspective. He leads us into functional architectures that speak of redemption and recovery. A photographic investigation aimed at determining the state and reality of facts, in which we, together with Centola, enter environments where every element, despite abandonment, is alive in thought or sight. Every object photographed, every environment, has a strong power that compels us to hold our gaze. The photographic style, the use of piercing light, and colors allow us to distinguish what is in front of our eyes, allowing us to separate objects that become metaphors of dispersion and abandonment.
