Cagliari to Host European CoLab on the Blue and Green Economy

On 2 October 2025, Cagliari will welcome policymakers, entrepreneurs, researchers, and industry leaders for a workshop dedicated to accelerating the blue and green economy in Europe’s coastal regions. The event, organised by Climate KIC in collaboration with the Region of Sardinia and its innovation agency Sardegna Ricerche, is part of the Interreg project Nest4ESG.

Coastal areas represent a significant share of Europe’s economy, covering 13% of the landmass but home to 40% of its population and GDP. At the same time, these regions are increasingly exposed to the effects of climate change, from rising sea levels to biodiversity loss. The workshop aims to confront these risks while exploring opportunities for sustainable development and innovation.

The Community Collaboration Laboratory (CoLab) in Cagliari will convene stakeholders from both public and private sectors, along with representatives of marine and coastal industries, regional authorities, and academia. The agenda focuses on building new collaborations to strengthen resilience, protect ecosystems, and unlock economic potential in coastal communities.

This gathering forms part of a broader Climate KIC initiative to connect climate challenges with business solutions.

Four CoLabs are scheduled across Europe during autumn 2025:

  • Ljubljana (Slovenia) on 11 September,
  • Cagliari (Italy) on 2 October,
  • Barcelona (Spain) on 10 October,
  • Warsaw (Poland) on 22 October.

Each event will examine systemic approaches to climate innovation, from community-led housing transitions to green public-private partnerships.

In Sardinia, the discussions are expected to lay the groundwork for longer-term collaboration, linking local initiatives with European networks. Organisers describe the CoLab as a first step toward building a movement where policymakers, industries, and innovators work together to reshape the economic future of Europe’s coasts.
