Bisus: Memory and the Shadow of Time

Bisus: Memory and the Shadow of Time

The Department of Culture and Entertainment of the Municipality of Cagliari presents “Bisus: Memory and the Shadow of Time,” a solo exhibition celebrating the extensive artistic career of Gabriella Locci, curated by Olga Scotto di Vettimo and installed by Casa Falconieri. Hosted at the prestigious Municipal Art Gallery from May 18 to November 3, the exhibition showcases a selection of Locci’s most recent works, reflecting over sixty years of artistic experimentation and expressive research.

The exhibition focuses on Locci’s production over the last fifteen years and includes woodcuts, etching techniques, and paintings. At the center of the display, three imposing works dominate the exhibition space, transforming it into an immersive installation and establishing an intimate dialogue with visitors. Symbolic elements, like the black carpet oval on the floor, unify the room, while a video documents the interaction between the artwork and space, proposing a symbolic journey into the artist’s imagination.

A prominent figure in the renewal of graphic art, Gabriella Locci has devoted herself to experimenting with engraving languages and artistic techniques. Her studio, frequented by international artists and new generations alike, has become a hub for methodological exchange and research. Since 2000, as president of Casa Falconieri, Locci has contributed to the dissemination and modernization of engraving techniques through exhibitions, conferences, and educational projects.

Among her most significant international experiences, Locci has represented Italy at the Venice Biennale, the Turin Book Fair, and the Reina Sofia Museum in Madrid, where, in 2024, she presented “Memory and the Work of Time,” a manifesto of her artistic philosophy. The theme of time, seen as a mental space and dimension of memory, profoundly characterizes her work, and Locci’s artistic vision finds expression in a continuous exploration of past and present.

A special event will take place on Friday, August 30: journalist Alessandra Menesini, together with curator Olga Scotto di Vettimo, will engage in a conversation with the artist, delving into themes related to contemporary art, the relationship between art and space, and the interaction between artist and audience. The first ten people attending the event will receive a small artwork as a gift, part of a performance Locci created for the 250th anniversary celebrations of Calasetta.
