Arbarée. The Adventures of Captain Montonaro
Vindice Lecis presents his new novel, Arbarée. The adventures of Captain Montonaro.
In a lively conversation with the author Manuela Arca.
Sardinia, 1474. The army of the Marquis of Oristano and Count of Goceano, Leonardo de Alagòn, wages war against the fiefs of Viceroy Nicolò Carroz. Leading the charge is Nicola Montonaro, a handsome and daring captain, who quickly advances towards Cagliari, occupying lands and castles. However, his open hostility towards the Crown of Aragon, the ruler of the island, soon makes him a nuisance even to Alagòn himself. Imprisoned and then entrusted to the corsair Charles Alleman, a knight of the Order of St. John, he spends long months at sea, engaging in attacks on Barbary and Aragonese ships. The call of his homeland brings him back to Sardinia: in 1478, he participates in the battle of Macomer, where the march is overwhelmed. The scribe Salvatore Gusay, known as the poet, is tasked with following him and transcribing his exploits all the way to distant Rhodes. Through his sharp and ironic gaze, we hear the echo of a dream of freedom that is never extinguished.
